Why Timeline is Empty in Final Cut Pro
Direct solutions for fixing blank timelines, missing projects, and compound clip navigation in Final Cut Pro.
A timeline is empty in Final Cut Pro primarily because the active project was closed, you accidentally double-clicked into an empty compound clip, or the timeline view is zoomed out to a blank section.
Here are the direct methods to fix an empty timeline in Final Cut Pro.
How do you open an existing project timeline?
If you just opened Final Cut Pro and the bottom half of the screen says "No Project Selected," the application simply needs you to tell it which timeline to load.
To open an existing project timeline:
- Look at your Browser panel (top left).
- Locate the icon that looks like a small clapperboard with a star inside. This is a Project file.
- Double-click the Project icon. The timeline will instantly populate with all your clips and edits.
How do you exit an empty compound clip?
If you double-clicked a blank or single-layer compound clip by mistake, Final Cut Pro "steps inside" that clip, hiding the rest of your main timeline.
To exit an empty compound clip:
- Look directly above the timeline panel on the left side.
- You will see a breadcrumb trail (e.g.,
My Project > Compound Clip). - Click the left-pointing arrow (
<) to step back out to your main project timeline. Your full edit will reappear.
How do you fix a zoomed-out blank timeline?
If the timeline is open but you only see dark grey space, your playhead is parked hours past the end of your actual video clips.
To fix a zoomed-out blank timeline:
- Click anywhere inside the dark grey timeline panel.
- Press
Shift+Zon your keyboard. This is the Zoom to Fit command. - Final Cut Pro will instantly resize the view to perfectly frame your entire edit, bringing all clips back into view.
