Why Media is Missing in Final Cut Pro

How do you reconnect missing media?

If your timeline is filled with bright red "Missing File" warnings, Final Cut Pro has lost the file path to the original media.

To reconnect missing media:

  1. Select the missing clips or the entire Event in the Browser.
  2. Go to File > Relink Files > Original Media.
  3. A window will show all missing files. Click the Locate All button.
  4. Navigate to the folder or external hard drive where the original files are currently stored.
  5. Click Choose. Final Cut Pro will scan the folder, match the files, and instantly bring them back online.

How do you fix missing media after renaming files?

If you renamed your video files using Finder after importing them into Final Cut Pro, the software will mark them as missing because the names no longer match its database.

To fix missing media caused by renaming:

  1. Use the Relink Files tool (File > Relink Files > Original Media).
  2. When locating the files, Final Cut Pro may refuse to link them because the names differ.
  3. You must manually rename the files in Finder back to their original names, or re-import the newly named files into Final Cut Pro and manually replace the clips on the timeline.

How do you fix missing proxy media?

If the clips are red but say "Missing Proxy," your original media is fine, but the low-resolution editing files were deleted or disconnected.

To fix missing proxy media:

  1. Select the missing proxy clips in the Browser.
  2. Right-click and choose Transcode Media.
  3. Check the box for Create proxy media and select your desired resolution (e.g., 50%).
  4. Click OK. Final Cut Pro will regenerate the proxy files in the background and automatically bring them online.
