Why Proxy Media is Not Working in Final Cut Pro
Direct solutions for fixing missing proxies, toggling proxy playback, and regenerating disconnected proxy files in Final Cut Pro.
Proxy media is not working in Final Cut Pro typically because the viewer is still set to play original media, the proxy generation process failed, or the external proxy files were disconnected.
Here are the direct methods to fix proxy media in Final Cut Pro.
How do you toggle proxy playback on?
If you successfully generated proxy files but the timeline playback is still lagging and stuttering, the viewer is likely still forcing playback of the heavy 4K or 8K original files.
To toggle proxy playback on:
- Look at the top right corner of the Viewer window.
- Click the View dropdown menu.
- Under the Media section, change the selection from Optimized/Original to Proxy Preferred or Proxy Only.
- The video quality will drop slightly, but playback will instantly become smooth.
How do you regenerate missing proxy files?
If you select "Proxy Only" in the viewer and your clips turn into red "Missing Proxy" warnings, the low-resolution files were never created or were deleted to save space.
To regenerate missing proxy files:
- Select the missing clips or the entire Event in the Browser.
- Right-click and select Transcode Media.
- Check the box for Create proxy media.
- Choose the proxy format (ProRes Proxy or H.264) and select a frame size (e.g., 50%).
- Click OK. Final Cut Pro will regenerate the files in the background, and the red warnings will disappear once complete.
How do you relink disconnected proxy media?
If an external editor generated proxy files for you and sent them on a hard drive, Final Cut Pro will not automatically see them until you explicitly link them to your library.
To relink disconnected proxy media:
- Select the clips in your Browser that need proxies.
- Go to File > Relink Files > Proxy Media.
- A window will appear showing the offline proxy links. Click Locate All.
- Navigate to the external folder where the editor saved the proxy files.
- Click Choose. Final Cut Pro will attach the external proxies to your original high-resolution clips, allowing you to edit smoothly.
