If you press the spacebar and the playhead refuses to move while the viewer remains completely frozen, the Mac's core audio/video engine has crashed in the background.

To fix a frozen playback engine:

  1. Save your project and close Final Cut Pro.
  2. Open the Activity Monitor application on your Mac (located in Applications > Utilities).
  3. In the search bar at the top right, type coreaudiod.
  4. Select the coreaudiod process and click the X button at the top of the window to force quit it.
  5. The process will automatically restart. Reopen Final Cut Pro, and playback will instantly resume.

How do you fix video not playing due to external audio devices?

If the viewer is stuck on a single frame and won't play, a disconnected or misconfigured Bluetooth headphone or external audio interface can halt the entire video engine.

To fix audio device playback blocks:

  1. Disconnect any Bluetooth headphones (like AirPods) or USB audio interfaces from your Mac.
  2. Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > Sound.
  3. Set the Output and Input directly to your Mac's internal speakers and microphone.
  4. Restart Final Cut Pro and press play.

How do you fix a black screen in the viewer?

If the playhead moves across the timeline and you hear audio, but the viewer is completely black, the render cache for that specific section is corrupted.

To fix a black screen in the viewer:

  1. Select the Library in your Final Cut Pro Browser.
  2. Go to File > Delete Generated Library Files.
  3. Check Delete Render Files and select All.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Press the spacebar to play the timeline using the raw source media instead of the corrupted render cache.
