Why Project is Not Opening in Final Cut Pro

Direct solutions for fixing corrupted libraries, restoring backups, and bypassing timeline loads in Final Cut Pro.

A project is not opening in Final Cut Pro typically because the Library database file is corrupted, the timeline contains a crashing element, or there are permission errors on an external drive.

Here are the direct methods to fix a project not opening in Final Cut Pro.

How do you restore a Library backup?

If you double-click your Library file and Final Cut Pro throws an error saying "The document could not be opened," the master database file inside the Library is corrupted.

To restore a Library backup:

  1. Open Final Cut Pro with a new, blank Library.
  2. Go to File > Open Library > From Backup.
  3. In the dropdown menu, locate the name of your corrupted Library.
  4. Final Cut Pro automatically saves backups every 15 minutes. Select the most recent timestamp before the corruption occurred.
  5. Click Open. The software will create a fresh, working copy of your project from that exact moment in time.

How do you open a Library without loading the timeline?

If Final Cut Pro crashes specifically when loading the timeline of a large project, the crash is caused by a corrupted clip or render file currently open in the viewer.

To bypass a crashing timeline load:

  1. Close Final Cut Pro completely.
  2. Hold down the Option () key.
  3. Click the Final Cut Pro icon in your dock to launch the app.
  4. A window will appear asking you to choose a Library. Select your problem Library.
  5. Final Cut Pro will open the Library but keep the timeline completely empty. You can now safely delete the corrupted render cache (File > Delete Generated Library Files) before manually double-clicking the project in the Browser to open it.

How do you fix external drive permission errors?

If your Library is stored on an external hard drive and refuses to open with an "Access Denied" or "Read Only" error, macOS is blocking Final Cut Pro from reading the file.

To fix external drive permission errors:

  1. Close Final Cut Pro.
  2. Open Finder, right-click the external hard drive icon, and select Get Info.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the window to the Sharing & Permissions section.
  4. Click the padlock icon and enter your Mac password.
  5. Check the box that says Ignore ownership on this volume. Close the window and reopen the Library.
