How to Fix Video Stuttering in DaVinci Resolve
Actionable steps to resolve choppy playback, dropped frames, and video stuttering in DaVinci Resolve.
Video stuttering in DaVinci Resolve occurs when your computer hardware cannot decode the video files fast enough for real-time playback. This is usually caused by highly compressed codecs (like H.265), insufficient GPU power, or slow hard drives.
Here are the direct methods to fix video stuttering in DaVinci Resolve.
How do you lower the playback resolution?
Lowering the timeline proxy resolution reduces the visual quality of the preview monitor, instantly freeing up system resources and stopping stuttering. This does not affect the final export quality.
To lower playback resolution:
- Click Playback in the top menu bar.
- Hover over Timeline Proxy Resolution.
- Select Half or Quarter.
How do you generate proxy media?
If lowering the proxy resolution fails, you must create proxy media. Proxy media replaces heavy, compressed 4K/8K files with lightweight, edit-friendly versions.
To generate proxy media:
- Select the stuttering clips in the Media Pool.
- Right-click and choose Generate Proxy Media.
- Wait for the generation process to complete.
- Go to Playback > Proxy Handling and select Prefer Proxies.
How do you use the Render Cache for heavy effects?
If stuttering only happens when playing over color grades, text titles, or transitions, the GPU is struggling to render the effects in real time.
To enable the Render Cache:
- Go to Playback > Render Cache.
- Select Smart.
- Wait for the red line above the timeline clips to turn blue. Blue indicates the effect has been pre-rendered into a temporary file for smooth playback.
Why does H.265 (HEVC) footage stutter?
H.265 is a highly compressed delivery codec, not an editing codec. Decompressing H.265 on the fly requires massive CPU and GPU power.
To fix H.265 stuttering:
* Free Version: The free version of DaVinci Resolve does not support hardware-accelerated decoding for H.265 on Windows. You must transcode the footage to ProRes or DNxHR using external software like Handbrake, or upgrade to DaVinci Resolve Studio.
* Studio Version: Ensure hardware acceleration is enabled by navigating to Preferences > System > Decode Options and checking the boxes for hardware decoding.
Does hard drive speed cause stuttering?
Yes. If you are editing 4K video off a mechanical hard disk drive (HDD), the drive physically cannot spin fast enough to deliver the data to Resolve.
To fix storage bottleneck stuttering:
Move your project files and source media to an internal Solid State Drive (SSD) or a fast external USB-C/Thunderbolt SSD (minimum 500 MB/s read speed).
