How to Fix Timeline Resolution Mismatch in DaVinci Resolve

Direct solutions for fixing timeline resolution mismatch issues and scaling problems in DaVinci Resolve.

A timeline resolution mismatch in DaVinci Resolve is typically caused by incorrect project master settings or improper image scaling preferences for mixed media.

Here are the direct methods to fix resolution mismatch issues in DaVinci Resolve.

How do you change the global timeline resolution?

If you intended to create a 4K video but your timeline is set to 1080p, you must change the fundamental project settings.

To change the timeline resolution:

  1. Open the Project Settings (the gear icon in the bottom right corner).
  2. Under Master Settings, locate the Timeline Format section.
  3. Change the Timeline resolution drop-down menu to match your desired output (e.g., 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD).
  4. Click Save. All clips will immediately scale to fit the new timeline size.

How do you fix black bars on mismatched media?

If you have 1080p footage in a 4K timeline, DaVinci Resolve's default scaling behavior might surround the video with black bars.

To fix black bars using image scaling:

  1. Go to Project Settings > Image Scaling.
  2. Locate the Input Scaling section.
  3. Change the Mismatched resolution files drop-down menu to Scale full frame with crop. This forces the image to fill the entire frame, eliminating black bars (though it will crop the edges of the video).
  4. Click Save.

How do you override scaling on a single clip?

If your global project settings are correct but one specific clip looks distorted or improperly scaled, you can override its individual settings.

To override scaling on a single clip:

  1. Select the problematic clip on your timeline.
  2. Open the Inspector panel (top right).
  3. Scroll down to the Retime and Scaling section.
  4. Change the Scaling drop-down from "Project Settings" to Crop, Fit, or Fill depending on how you want the clip to behave.

How do you fix vertical video mismatch?

If you are editing a vertical video (9:16) for social media, but your timeline is horizontal (16:9), you will see massive black pillarboxes on the sides.

To fix vertical video mismatch:

  1. Go to Project Settings > Master Settings > Timeline Format.
  2. Check the box that says Use vertical resolution.
  3. Click Save. Resolve will instantly swap the width and height dimensions, formatting the timeline perfectly for vertical viewing.
