How to Fix Proxy Media Issues in DaVinci Resolve

Proxies not attaching? Black screens? Learn how to troubleshoot and fix the most common proxy media issues in DaVinci Resolve.

Proxy workflows are essential for editing high-resolution 4K or 8K footage on standard hardware. However, DaVinci Resolve's proxy system can sometimes glitch, leaving you with unlinked files or strange playback artifacts.

Here is how to fix common proxy media issues in DaVinci Resolve.

Issue 1: Proxies Won't Link

You generated proxies externally (e.g., in Blackmagic Proxy Generator or Premiere) and imported your raw media into Resolve, but right-clicking and choosing "Link Proxy Media" fails.

The Cause: Resolve requires strict parity between the original file and the proxy file. The proxy must* have the exact same file name (excluding extension), the exact same audio channel count, and the exact same timecode.

* The Fix: Check your proxy generation settings. If your original camera file had 4 channels of audio, your proxy must be generated with 4 channels, even if they are empty. If the timecode was stripped during external proxy generation, Resolve will never link them. You must regenerate the proxies with correct timecode passthrough.

Issue 2: Proxies Generate, but Playback is Still Slow

You generated proxies internally within Resolve, but the timeline is still lagging.

The Fix: You might have forgotten to tell Resolve to actually use* the proxies. Go to the top menu bar: Playback > Proxy Handling. Ensure it is set to Prefer Proxies. If it is set to "Disable Proxies," Resolve will continue trying to play the heavy original files.

Issue 3: Proxy Generation Fails or Freezes

When you right-click a clip and select "Generate Proxy Media," the progress bar stalls at 0% or throws an error.

* The Cause: This is often a storage issue or a corrupted cache.

* The Fix 1 (Storage): Check where your proxies are being saved (Project Settings > Master Settings > Working Folders > Proxy generation location). Ensure that drive has sufficient free space and read/write permissions.

* The Fix 2 (Format): Some heavily compressed original files (like certain smartphone VFR files) confuse Resolve's generator. Try changing the proxy format (Project Settings > Master Settings > Optimized Media and Render Cache > Proxy media resolution/format) to a different codec, like ProRes Proxy or DNxHR LB, and try generating again.

Issue 4: The "Black Screen" Proxy

You link the proxy, and the clip in the viewer goes completely black.

* The Fix: This happens when the proxy file itself is corrupted or the resolution aspect ratio is drastically different from the source file in a way Resolve can't scale. Unlink the proxy (Right-click > Unlink Proxy Media), delete the proxy file from your hard drive, and regenerate it natively within DaVinci Resolve.
