How to import video into DaVinci Resolve Edit page

DaVinci Resolve imports video by drag and drop directly into the media pool, supporting formats from H.264 to Blackmagic RAW, EXR, and ProRes. This guide covers importing files, folders, and maintaining directory structures.

How do you import video into DaVinci Resolve Edit page?

Drag files directly from your hard drive into the media pool at the top left of the Edit page. You can also use File > Import > Media or press Cmd+I (Ctrl+I on Windows). DaVinci Resolve supports virtually all professional video and audio formats including H.264, H.265, ProRes, DNxHR, Blackmagic RAW, ARRI RAW, RED R3D, EXR, DPX, WAV, and AIFF. You can even drag entire folders with subfolders and their structure is maintained in the media pool.

How do you maintain folder structure when importing?

Drag a folder into the media pool instead of individual files. Resolve creates bins that match the folder hierarchy. For projects organized by shoot day, camera card, or scene, this preserves your existing file organization. Subfolders become nested bins.

For editors who pre-organize footage in Cutsio before importing into Resolve, use Cutsio's collections to group related clips. Export an EDL referencing the original files, and Resolve links to the source media on your drive regardless of folder structure.

What file formats does DaVinci Resolve support?

DaVinci Resolve handles formats from iPhone footage to high-end digital film cameras. Common formats include H.264 and H.265 for consumer and web video, ProRes and DNxHR for professional finishing, Blackmagic RAW for BMD cameras, ARRI RAW and RED R3D for cinema production, and EXR and DPX for VFX pipelines. No transcoding or rewrapping is needed — Resolve reads the original files directly.
