Best Way to Fix Timeline Issues in DaVinci Resolve

Direct methods for fixing missing timelines, zooming to fit clips, and disabling track locks in DaVinci Resolve.

The best way to fix timeline issues in DaVinci Resolve is to double-click the master timeline in the Media Pool, use the Zoom to Fit shortcut, or unlock specific tracks preventing edits.

Here are the direct methods to best fix timeline issues in DaVinci Resolve.

What is the fastest way to open a missing timeline?

If you launch DaVinci Resolve and the entire bottom half of the screen says "No Timeline Opened," the application is waiting for you to load your project into the viewer.

To quickly open a missing timeline:

  1. Ensure you are on the Edit page (bottom center icon).
  2. Look at your Media Pool in the top left corner.
  3. Locate the icon that looks like a sequence of blue clips (your Timeline file).
  4. Double-click the Timeline icon. The editing interface will instantly populate with all your video and audio tracks.

How do you fix a blank or zoomed-out timeline?

If the timeline is open but you only see empty dark grey space, your playhead is parked hours past the end of your actual edit, or you are zoomed in too far.

To zoom to fit the entire timeline:

  1. Click anywhere inside the timeline panel to make it active.
  2. Press Shift+Z on your keyboard.
  3. DaVinci Resolve will instantly resize the view to perfectly frame your entire edit, bringing all clips back into view.

How do you fix disabled or locked tracks?

If you are trying to cut, move, or delete a clip but DaVinci Resolve ignores your mouse clicks, the specific video or audio track is locked or auto-selected incorrectly.

To unlock tracks preventing edits:

  1. Look at the track headers on the far left side of the timeline (e.g., V1, A1).
  2. If a small padlock icon is highlighted white, the track is locked. Click the padlock to unlock it.
  3. If the track is grey instead of bright blue/green, the auto-select button (< >) is turned off. Click it to re-enable edits on that specific layer.
