How to Use AI Tools with Final Cut Pro
Final Cut Pro doesn't have heavy built-in AI editing features yet, but you can easily integrate external AI tools into your workflow to speed up your process.
While Final Cut Pro (FCP) is incredibly fast thanks to its Magnetic Timeline, it currently lacks some of the heavy-hitting built-in AI features found in competitors like DaVinci Resolve Studio (like text-based editing or automatic silence removal).
However, you can still easily use AI tools with Final Cut Pro by utilizing a companion-app workflow. Here is how to supercharge FCP with AI.
The "Pre-Edit" AI Workflow
The most effective way to use AI with Final Cut Pro is to handle the tedious "rough cut" phase before the footage even hits your FCP timeline.
- Choose an AI Pre-Editor: Use a dedicated AI video editing tool like Cutsio. These tools specialize in analyzing raw footage.
- Upload and Analyze: Feed your raw camera files (or lightweight proxy versions if your internet is slow) into the AI tool.
- Automate the Cuts: Instruct the AI to perform a "Silent Slice"—automatically identifying and removing all dead air, pauses, and breaths. This turns a 1-hour interview into a tight 40-minute clip instantly.
- Export an FCPXML: This is crucial. Do not export a rendered video. Export an
FCPXMLfile from the AI tool. This file contains the metadata for all the cuts.
Integrating into Final Cut Pro
- Import the FCPXML: Open Final Cut Pro. Go to
File > Import > XML...and select the file generated by the AI. - The Magnetic Magic: Final Cut Pro will read the XML and instantly construct a new Project timeline. It will link to the original high-resolution media on your drive and apply all the hundreds of cuts the AI made. Because of FCP's Magnetic Timeline, all the gaps where silence was removed will instantly snap together perfectly.
Using AI for Audio and Color
You can also use AI plugins directly within FCP:
* Audio: While FCP has voice isolation, third-party AI audio plugins (like those from iZotope or Waves) can be applied directly to your clips to remove severe background noise.
* Color Matching: FCP's built-in "Match Color" feature uses machine learning to analyze the color profile of one clip and apply it to another, saving time on balancing multi-cam shoots.
By using external AI tools for the heavy lifting and FCP for the creative finishing, you get the best of both worlds.
