How to Fix Broken Transitions in DaVinci Resolve
Direct methods for handling transition handles and timeline gaps in DaVinci Resolve.
The best way to fix broken transitions in DaVinci Resolve is to ensure your clips have enough handles, remove hidden timeline gaps, and manually adjust the transition duration.
Here are the direct methods to fix broken transitions in DaVinci Resolve.
What is the fastest way to add transition handles?
If you drag a cross-dissolve or a push transition between two clips and DaVinci Resolve refuses to apply it, or throws a "Not Enough Handles" error, the clips on your timeline are cut exactly at the beginning or end of the raw media file, leaving zero extra frames for the transition to overlap.
To quickly add transition handles:
- Open the Edit page (Shift+4).
- Select the cut point between the two clips on your timeline.
- Press
Tto activate the Trim Edit Mode tool. - Click and drag the left side of the cut point to the right (shortening the outgoing clip by 15-30 frames).
- Click and drag the right side of the cut point to the left (shortening the incoming clip by 15-30 frames).
- Now, drag your transition from the Effects Library onto the cut point. DaVinci Resolve will automatically use the hidden extra frames (handles) to smoothly overlap the two clips.
How do you fix invisible timeline gaps?
If the transition applies but suddenly flashes black in the middle of the effect, DaVinci Resolve is trying to cross-dissolve a 1-frame gap of empty space between the two video clips on the timeline.
To fix invisible timeline gaps:
- Open the Edit page (Shift+4).
- Zoom in tightly on the cut point where the transition is failing.
- Look for any tiny black slivers of space between the two clips.
- Select the empty space (it will highlight white) and press the
Deletekey on your keyboard. - DaVinci Resolve will snap the two clips perfectly together, instantly fixing the black flash during the transition.
How do you manually adjust broken transition durations?
If the transition applies but plays way too fast or abruptly cuts off, DaVinci Resolve applied the default length (e.g., 1 second) to a clip that only has 10 frames of handles available, forcing the effect to break halfway through.
To manually adjust broken transition durations:
- Open the Edit page (Shift+4).
- Select the transition applied to the cut point on your timeline.
- Open the Inspector panel (top right) and click the Transition tab.
- Locate the Duration setting and manually type a shorter length (e.g.,
0.5seconds or15frames). - Alternatively, click and drag the edges of the transition graphic directly on the timeline to visually shorten the effect.
- DaVinci Resolve will instantly adjust the transition to fit within the available handles, fixing the broken playback speed.
