You drag an audio clip into your DaVinci Resolve timeline, but instead of the familiar jagged peaks and valleys, the audio track is just a flat, solid block of color. You can hear the sound, but you can't see the waveform to make precise cuts.

Here is how to fix audio waveforms not showing in DaVinci Resolve.

## Fix 1: Timeline View Options (The Most Common Issue)
Usually, the waveforms aren't broken; they are just hidden by a display setting.

1. Go to the **Edit** page.
2. Look above your timeline, towards the left side (next to the magnet snapping icon). Click the **Timeline View Options** icon (it looks like a small rectangle with a slider underneath).
3. A drop-down menu will appear with several icons.
4. Look for the icon that resembles an audio waveform (a jagged line). Ensure it is clicked and highlighted white. If it's greyed out, Resolve will hide all waveforms to save processing power.
5. Also, ensure the audio track height slider is dragged up enough so the track is physically large enough to display the waveform.

## Fix 2: Force Resolve to Rebuild Waveforms
If the display setting is correct, but the waveform is still missing, the temporary cache file that generates the visual waveform image might be corrupted or stuck.

* **The Quick Jiggle:** Sometimes simply zooming in and out of the timeline rapidly (`Alt/Option + Scroll Wheel`) forces Resolve to redraw the screen and generate the waveform.
* **The Cache Clear:** If that doesn't work, right-click the problematic audio clip in the timeline. Depending on your Resolve version, look for an option to **Update Audio Waveform** or **Bounce Audio Effects**. If neither is present, try making a tiny, imperceptible cut in the clip (using the blade tool) and immediately undoing it (`Ctrl/Cmd + Z`). This forces the engine to recalculate the clip.

## Fix 3: Check for Variable Frame Rate (VFR) Video
If the audio is attached to a video file, and that video file is a screen recording (OBS) or smartphone footage, it might be a Variable Frame Rate (VFR) file. DaVinci Resolve struggles to parse the metadata of VFR files, which often results in missing audio waveforms.

* **The Fix:** You must transcode the original video file to a Constant Frame Rate (using a program like Handbrake) before importing it into Resolve.

## Fix 4: Compound Clips and Nested Audio
If you placed your audio inside a Compound Clip, the waveform on the main timeline often disappears.

* **The Fix:** Right-click the Compound Clip and select **Open in Timeline**. You will see the waveform inside the nested sequence. To see it on your main timeline, you usually need to "decompose" or break apart the compound clip (`Right-click > Decompose in Place`).
