## How do you stabilize shaky footage in DaVinci Resolve?

Select the shaky clip on the timeline and open the Inspector panel at the top right of the Edit page. Scroll to the Stabilization section and click the Stabilize button. DaVinci Resolve analyzes the clip frames and applies stabilization to smooth out camera motion. The process runs in the background and the stabilized clip plays back in real time once analysis is complete.

The stabilization uses image warping and translation to smooth out unwanted camera motion while preserving the natural motion of objects within the frame. You can adjust four parameters after stabilization is applied: Camera Lock, Smoothness, Zoom, and Crop Ratio.

## What do the stabilization parameters control in DaVinci Resolve?

**Camera Lock** controls how much the camera position is locked down. At 0%, the stabilization removes only subtle bumps and micro-jitters. As you increase the value, the algorithm works harder to lock the camera position, removing more significant motion. At 100%, the camera is fully locked and the clip appears as if it was shot on a tripod.

**Smoothness** controls the transition between stabilized frames. Higher values smooth out the camera movement more aggressively but may introduce a "floating" or "glassy" effect where the image appears to drift. Lower values preserve more of the original camera movement while removing sharp jolts.

**Zoom** adjusts the magnification of the stabilized image. Stabilization works by shifting and warping the image, which can cause black edges to appear around the frame. Increasing the Zoom value crops into the image to hide these edges. The default setting automatically determines the minimum zoom needed.

**Crop Ratio** sets the aspect ratio of the output. A ratio of 1.0 uses the full frame. Higher values crop into the footage horizontally, which can hide additional stabilization artifacts while creating a specific aspect ratio.

## How does stabilization differ for handheld, gimbal, and tripod footage?

| Source footage | Recommended settings | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld (walking) | Smoothness 0.3-0.5, Camera Lock 0.4-0.6 | Removes steps and bumps, preserves natural sway |
| Handheld (static) | Smoothness 0.2-0.3, Camera Lock 0.6-0.8 | Near tripod-lock stability |
| Gimbal | Smoothness 0.1-0.2, Camera Lock 0.2-0.3 | Removes micro-jitters from gimbal motors |
| Tripod with bump | Smoothness 0.1, Camera Lock 0.3-0.5 | Removes a single bump, keeps frame locked |
| Vehicle mount | Smoothness 0.5-0.7, Camera Lock 0.5-0.7 | Smooths road vibrations and turns |

Start with conservative settings and increase gradually. Over-stabilization produces artifacts — the image may warp unnaturally, objects near the edges may distort, and the floating effect can be disorienting. If a clip needs very high Smoothness or Camera Lock values, consider re-shooting with better support or using a gimbal.

## How does stabilization on the Edit page compare to the Color page or Fusion?

DaVinci Resolve offers stabilization in multiple locations. The Edit page stabilization is the most accessible — it is built into the inspector on every clip. The Color page offers stabilization through the Tracker panel, which provides more control over tracking points and allows you to apply stabilization to specific nodes within a grade. Fusion offers the Planar Tracker for complex stabilization and motion tracking.

| Location | Access | Control level | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edit page (Inspector) | One-click Stabilize | Four sliders | Quick fixes, most footage |
| Color page (Tracker) | Tracker panel > Stabilize | Tracking point selection | Footage needing specific tracking |
| Fusion (Planar Tracker) | Fusion page tools | Full tracking control | Complex VFX stabilization |

For most editing workflows, the Edit page stabilization is sufficient. The Color page tracker is useful when you need to stabilize footage that has already been graded or when the Edit page stabilization does not produce clean results. Fusion is reserved for VFX-heavy work where stabilization needs to be integrated into a composite.

## How does pre-editing footage reduce stabilization workload?

Stabilization processes every frame of every clip it is applied to. On a timeline filled with unedited footage — retakes, dead air, unusable clips — stabilization wastes processing time on content that will be cut.

Pre-edit your footage in Cutsio to remove retakes, silence, and bad takes before the timeline reaches Resolve. Only the usable selects need stabilization. For interview footage where the camera was mostly static, you can identify the specific handheld B-roll clips that need stabilization and apply it only to those.

## FAQ

### Is stabilization available in the free version of DaVinci Resolve?
Yes. Stabilization is available in both the free and Studio versions of DaVinci Resolve.

### How long does stabilization analysis take?
Analysis time depends on clip resolution and duration. A 10-second 4K clip typically analyzes in 5-15 seconds. Longer clips at higher resolutions take proportionally longer.

### Can I stabilize clips that already have speed changes?
Apply speed changes before stabilization. Stabilization works on the retimed frames. Apply the speed ramp, then stabilize the result.

### Why does my stabilized clip have black edges?
Stabilization shifts the image to compensate for camera movement. The Zoom parameter crops into the frame to hide the black edges. Increase Zoom slightly if edges are visible.

### Can I stabilize multiple clips at once?
Select multiple clips on the timeline and apply stabilization from the inspector. Each clip is analyzed and stabilized individually with the same settings.
