Best Way to Reduce Lag in DaVinci Resolve

Direct methods for generating optimized media, using proxy workflows, and clearing full hard drives in DaVinci Resolve.

The best way to reduce lag in DaVinci Resolve is to generate Optimized Media for heavy codecs, use the built-in Proxy Generator, and ensure the cache drive has adequate free space.

Here are the direct methods to best reduce lag in DaVinci Resolve.

What is the fastest way to generate Optimized Media?

If you are editing highly compressed H.264 or HEVC (H.265) footage, your CPU must work incredibly hard to decompress every frame in real-time, causing severe lag.

To quickly generate Optimized Media:

  1. Open the Media Pool and select the lagging clips.
  2. Right-click and choose Generate Optimized Media.
  3. DaVinci Resolve will convert the clips into a visually lossless, easy-to-edit format (like ProRes or DNxHR) in the background. Playback will become buttery smooth once complete.

How do you use the built-in Proxy Generator?

If your computer cannot handle Optimized Media because the files are too large, you must use lightweight, low-resolution proxy files to eliminate lag.

To use proxy workflows:

  1. Select the heavy 4K or 8K clips in the Media Pool.
  2. Right-click and choose Generate Proxy Media.
  3. Wait for the transcode to finish.
  4. Go to Playback > Proxy Handling in the top menu and select Prefer Proxies. DaVinci Resolve will now use the fast, low-resolution files for editing, but will automatically switch back to the original files for the final high-quality export.

How do you clear a full cache drive causing lag?

If your hard drive has less than 10-20% free space, your computer cannot swap temporary memory, causing DaVinci Resolve to instantly freeze or lag heavily during playback.

To clear a full cache drive:

  1. Go to Playback > Delete Render Cache.
  2. Select All to completely wipe out bloated temporary files from previous editing sessions.
  3. Check your system storage settings (e.g., Apple Menu > System Settings > General > Storage) to ensure you have at least 50GB of free space. Playback will improve immediately as the system breathes again.
