Best Way to Manage Large Projects in DaVinci Resolve

Direct methods for organizing Power Bins, using Smart Bins, and structuring timelines in massive DaVinci Resolve projects.

The best way to manage large projects in DaVinci Resolve is to utilize Smart Bins for automatic sorting, enable Power Bins for cross-project assets, and nest timelines for organization.

Here are the direct methods to best manage large projects in DaVinci Resolve.

What is the fastest way to use Smart Bins?

If you have hundreds of clips dumped into the Media Pool, manually sorting them into folders takes hours. Smart Bins automatically organize media based on metadata like camera type, frame rate, or keywords.

To quickly set up Smart Bins:

  1. Open the Media Pool on the Edit Page.
  2. Look for the Smart Bins section at the bottom of the bin list. If it is hidden, go to View > Show Smart Bins.
  3. Right-click the Smart Bins area and select Add Smart Bin.
  4. Set a rule, such as "Resolution contains 4K" or "Audio Channels is 2". DaVinci Resolve will instantly pull all matching clips into that folder without moving the actual files.

How do you enable Power Bins for cross-project assets?

If you constantly use the same logo, intro animation, or sound effects across different videos, you should not import them manually every single time you create a new project.

To enable Power Bins:

  1. Go to the top menu and click View > Show Power Bins.
  2. A new section called Power Bins will appear below your Master bin in the Media Pool.
  3. Drag your universal logos, music, and graphics into this folder.
  4. Open any other project in your database. The Power Bins will persist, allowing you to instantly drag those assets into any new timeline.

How do you nest timelines for complex edits?

If a feature film timeline becomes too massive to scroll through, you must break the edit down into smaller, manageable "scenes" or nested timelines.

To nest timelines:

  1. Create a new timeline for "Scene 1" and finish editing it.
  2. Create a "Master Timeline".
  3. Drag the "Scene 1" timeline directly from the Media Pool onto the Master Timeline. It will appear as a single, clean green clip.
  4. If you need to make changes, double-click the nested clip to step inside, make edits, and step back out. The Master Timeline updates automatically.
